Children Protective Services falls under major scrutiny in N.Y boy’s gruesome murder

Buffalo N.Y. (WKBW) – There is outrage from the community after a boy is killed by his stepfather in Buffalo. Authorities said there were warning signs that Abdifatah Mahmood, 10, was abused long before his death.

His stepfather, Ali Mohamed Mahmood, submerged the boy’s head in water, tied him up and then beat him 70 times with a rolling pin. This new interest in the case was unleashed after the Buffalo News released text of a 911 call made by the boy who begged for help. Those calls were made a year before his death. Buffalo Police did contact Child Protective Services but Abdifatah remained in the abusive home.

“There were a number of calls since 2010 and those were alarm calls,” Buffalo Police Department Communications Director Mike DeGeorge said.

Abdi’s father was convicted of the murder. Now, fingers are being pointed at CPS who many lawmakers said failed to do its jobs. Lawmakers from both Erie County and the state are putting pressure on CPD to make changes to ensure this doesn’t happen again. They are calling for a full investigation as soon as possible.
