First African American woman in Illinois congress dies
ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA: Cardiss Collins, the first African American woman for Illinois congress died today after suffering complications from pneumonia at a Virginia hospital. Mel Blackwell, said this week that the congresswoman died while in Alexandria.
She was a groundbreaking congresswoman,” Blackwell said.
Collins had been elected to Illinois congress in 1972 following a fatal plane crash that killed her husband Congressman George W. Collins.
